Build 003: The 1973 "Golden Year" 5.3L Vortec
The Vision: Iconic IH Style Meets Modern "Vortec" Reliability
The 1973 International Harvester Scout II is widely considered the “sweet spot” for California enthusiasts. Being a pre-1976 “Golden Year” vehicle, it offers total mechanical freedom. This project was rescued as an unfinished build and brought to our San Francisco studio to be transformed into a vibrant, high-performance daily driver. Finished in a striking “International Orange,” this Scout is a tribute to IH’s rugged heritage, powered by a powertrain that never quits.
Engineering & Powertrain: The 5.3L Vortec V8 Swap
We optimized this Scout for the modern driver by utilizing a 5.3-liter Vortec V8, a modern GM engine known for its incredible reliability and parts availability.
• The Drivetrain: The Vortec power is delivered through a modern four-speed automatic transmission and an NP241C dual-range transfer case, making it as capable on the highway as it is on the trails of the East Bay.
• Heavy-Duty Foundation: To handle the modern horsepower, the build features high-strength Dana 44 axles front and rear. This setup ensures that whether you are navigating San Francisco’s steep grades or hitting the dirt, the drivetrain is up to the task.
Body & Heritage Steel: A Vibrant Resurrection
The most striking feature of Build 003 is its classic IH-inspired orange paint. But the beauty is more than skin-deep.
• Rust Remediation: Like all Scout Club SF projects, this 1973 model underwent extensive heritage steel restoration. We addressed critical rust areas in the floors and rockers before the final bodywork and paint, ensuring this “Golden Year” legend is protected for another 50 years.
• The “Utility” Look: We equipped the truck with 17″ steel wheels and rugged tires, providing a classic “service vehicle” aesthetic with modern handling characteristics. A new windshield was installed to ensure crystal-clear views of the Pacific Coast Highway.
The Interior: Modern Comfort in a Classic Cabin
Inside, the cabin was stripped and re-imagined for clean, modern utility.
• Refined Vinyl: The interior was fully re-trimmed in premium black vinyl, offering a durable and sleek contrast to the orange exterior.
• Vintage Air Climate Control: To combat the microclimates of the SF Bay Area, we integrated a Vintage Air system. This allows the owner to stay cool in the valley heat and fog-free on the coast, all through a clean, period-correct dash interface.
