Build 002: The 1977 "Wine Country" Traveler

The Vision: Long-Wheelbase Adventure & Utility

The 1977 International Harvester Scout II Traveler is a rare breed—offering the rugged capability of a 4×4 with the extended cargo space of a classic SUV. This build was transformed into a sophisticated, high-performance “Adventure Estate,” finished in a deep Burgundy Red. Whether it’s hauling camping gear to Mendocino or navigating the Napa Valley backroads, this Traveler was engineered for comfort, capacity, and classic IH style.

Engineering & Powertrain: The 350ci Crate V8

At the heart of this build is a Chevrolet 350ci V8 crate engine, providing a massive leap in horsepower and reliability over the original factory powertrain.

• Fuel Management: We integrated a FiTech Fuel Injection system, ensuring crisp throttle response and “first-turn” starting—essential for the damp morning fog of the Outer Sunset.

• Drivetrain & Capability: Power is managed through a rugged three-speed automatic transmission and a Dana dual-range transfer case. This setup, combined with the legendary Dana 44 axles, gives the Traveler an unstoppable presence on any terrain.

• Modern Lighting: We updated the front end with high-output LED headlights, providing modern visibility for nighttime drives through the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Body & Exterior: The Open-Air Traveler

The “Traveler” silhouette is defined by its extended 118-inch wheelbase. We preserved this iconic look while adding modern versatility.

• The “Softopper” Experience: This build features a premium Softopper soft top, allowing the owner to transition from a fully enclosed SUV to an open-air safari vehicle in minutes.

• Stance & Wheels: A Rough Country 4″ lift provides the necessary clearance for 17″ US Wheels (powder-coated for durability) wrapped in 33″ all-terrain tires.

• Custom Details: The exterior is rounded out with a classic Scout II tailgate conversion, blending utility with a clean, vintage aesthetic.

The Interior: Refined Comfort for the Journey

Inside, this Traveler received a full “ground-up” upholstery restoration, focusing on long-distance comfort and premium materials.

• Luxury & HVAC: The dark red exterior is complemented by a fully reupholstered tan interior featuring aftermarket A/C to keep the cabin cool during East Bay summers.

• Sound & Connectivity: A modern Bluetooth stereo system is seamlessly integrated, ensuring a connected driving experience without sacrificing the vintage dash layout.
