Build 06: The 1976 "Vortec-Powered" Scout II Traveler
The 1976 "Vortec-Powered" Scout II Traveler
This 1976 International Harvester Scout II Traveler was meticulously modified and refurbished by Scout Club LA in 2025. Engineered for the modern adventurer, this build combines the extended wheelbase of the Traveler model with a high-performance modern powertrain, making it the ultimate open-air coastal cruiser.
Modern Power & Performance
At the heart of this build is a 4.8-liter Vortec V8 conversion, offering a massive leap in power and efficiency over the original IH iron. To maximize performance, the engine is equipped with FiTech fuel injection, a revised camshaft for improved torque, and long-tube headers. The drivetrain is built for versatility, featuring a smooth-shifting automatic transmission, a dual-range transfer case, and rugged Dana front and rear axles.
Rugged Aesthetic & Versatility
The exterior was finished in a sophisticated Matte Gray, providing a contemporary edge to the classic Scout silhouette. For the ultimate outdoor experience, we fitted a custom tan soft top with roll-up side panels, allowing for a seamless transition from a closed cabin to a fully open safari-style configuration.
Off-Road Capability
To match the increased power of the Vortec V8, the truck’s stance and capability were elevated with a precision-tuned lifted suspension. This setup provides the necessary clearance for larger tires while maintaining a refined ride quality on the street. Whether navigating city boulevards or remote trails, this Traveler is engineered to handle both with ease.
